Return To The Source

If you are stuck, maybe it's time to step away

I sat down today unsure of what I would write to you. I promised myself that if I were to begin this endeavor, I would never miss a newsletter. And I’ve kept that promise for 42 weeks now, even on days like this when I sit here with nothing certain to say.

I’m grateful you’re here.

You could be doing a million other things, yet you choose to give me a few minutes of your time. That matters to me. In fact, it matters so much that sometimes it makes me want to skip a week when I feel like I don’t have something “valuable” enough to offer.

But I broke out of that feeling the same way I always do: by returning to unfiltered expression. I opened my notebook and wrote exactly what was in my head. No editing, no polishing. Just letting it out. That practice has served me my whole life. It brings me back to clarity when I feel uncertain about what to do next.

At its core, the objective is simple:
Let go into the process of discovery.

It takes many forms, but the aim is always the same:
- to remove yourself from the problem,
- to loosen your grip on the outcome,
- to pull your head out of your own ass long enough for the truth to appear.

I’m not unique in this. Einstein was known for his long solitary walks, the place where many of his breakthroughs arrived. When stuck, he didn’t grind harder; he played the violin or took time away. Rick Rubin echoes the same wisdom. He reminds us to return to our original source: Mother Nature.

Nature has a way of returning us to ourselves.
When we align with it, ideas appear effortlessly.

The Creative Act, Rick Rubin

If you find yourself lost or stuck, step away from the thing you’re trying to force. When you obsess over the outcome, the answer you want stays hidden.

The direction you’re seeking only reveals itself in the space between the information you hold and the compass within you.

Less truly is more.

Reduce your inputs and your body will tell you where to go.
Return to The Source- to nature -and you’ll remember your truth.
You’ll see that everything you think you’re missing is already there.

Love. Meaning. Joy. Purpose.
They all start within.

If you wish for love, realize that you already have it.
If you wish for meaning, realize that it isn’t assigned, it’s claimed.

So step back. Take a walk. Have fun.
Let life speak to you again.

I recorded another conversation with my good friend Harry. I love speaking with new people in my life but I also love these conversations I have with my close friends. The conversation is goofier and I feel like both sides are much more comfortable to express things going on in our lives. I really enjoyed this one and hope you do too.

This is a picture of my older brother Matthew (he’s not a baby anymore) at my favorite place in the world: Dolan Falls. This is my source. This is where I am able to tap into all of the wonders of the universe.

On a side note, this is how my parents raised me and my siblings. Nature was and is such a huge part of their lives and they made sure we experienced that same gift along with them. I am so grateful they chose to raise us like this.
